Im sorry this was not uploaded earlier i was having trouble loading it. Today in class we arrived and took a short Kite Runner quiz, next we wrote a short narrative about a "Wht if" scenario in Kite Runner. The narrative was approximately 3/4 of a page, we then discussed the final for the rest of the period

Today we came into class and saw that Cane would be our sub for the day. He had some tunes playing, and we began to assemble our packets to finally turn in our 200 point living history assigment. Apparently our drafts are worth 15 points each, so I was glad to remember that Ms. Wray had a one of my drafts. After turning those in, Cane took a poll and discovered that most of the class, including me, had not prepared for the test. He handed out a scantron that had F G H I J as answer choices which threw me off for the test. The multile choice was pretty easy, but the short answer took a while. We turned in the tests, and checked out Kite Runner.

When we got to class we immediately turned in our attribution of research and revised works cited page. After that we went back into our groups from last time to continue our visual presentation. Then we presented them to the class discussing themes and explaining the symbolism of our visual. Once we got to the last presentation, all of a sudden we heard a loud laugh burst from the back of the classroom. Ms. Wray's face turned red and she was hysterically laughing. She was so hysterical that she had to excuse herself from the room. When she came back, she still had the giggles but got a hold of herself to tell us why she was cracking up. Trenten had whispered that one of the things on their visual aid looked obese and Ms. Wray started thinking back to her childhood when you would press your cheeks forward so your mouth would look like a fish mouth and your cheeks would be chubby. Then you say something about how your mother thinks you can't smile because your face is so chubby. I didn't record every detail about "Chubs" being that she gave me the scribe form after the event. Anyway, she told us that she did that with her friends when she was younger. It was very odd but really funny to watch her start crying like that. Once she calmed down, we finished the presentations and we started to receive many papers back including our Living History rough draft. We all sat down in our regular spots and Ms. Wray explained spelling, punctuation and grammar errors that tend to happen. Like it's and its. Or Their, there, and they're. Also we heard about "Fanboys." For And Nor But Or Yet So. It reduces run on sentences. There's a link on the wiki (this website obviously) about formatting dialogue if you need some more pointers. And if you are worried that your story is going to go more than 7 pages if you double space the heading and title, that's alright.
HW:

  • Living history paper is due on Monday! (5-24) Bring all process pieces as well.
  • ASP exam is also on Monday. Look at your study guide and bring your book next time!
  • Shmoop is a good study technique because it analyzes the text. But make sure that you actually read the book because Cliffnotes, Sparknotes and Shmoop aren't going to be a useful substitute for the actual reading.

We walked into the class and Ms Wray collected our revised drafts of the living history essay. She is going to edit them and give them back to us next class. Then we got a cheer leading reminder: 4 weeks left of school! We got an ASP study guide and then had a journal write about the ending of the book. After that we got into groups and discussed the questions each group was given, and then we were supposed to make a poster of mostly pictures to describe the answers. We did not have enough time to finish, so we will continue next time.

This afternoon it seemed as if class flew by. It was a beautiful Friday afternoon and the sun was shinning. We spent the first part of class taking our vocab quiz. Then we moved on to our journal, and wrote journal write #21. We wrote about about Gene and how he changed in chapter 9 and 10. The second part of the question was if Gene was gay, and did it matter? We later discussed these questions for quite some time before we were passed back our Works Cited page that we wrote while Kane was here. We left to go to the lab to make revisions on our Works Cited page and before we knew it, the bell rang and it was time to move onto the last class of the day, before the weekend.

Today was another relaxing day in Mrs. Wray's classroom. Trent didn't have as many questions about Gene and Finny's sexuality, nor did he have clever jokes, or good songs to sing. We started off by choosing partners to revise the rough draft of our research papers. After reading and editing each others papers, we moved on to discussion/work for A Separate Peace. In groups of 3 we compared how one character (either Finny or Gene) has changed from the beginning of the book to now with the use of 3 words to describe them and 1 quote. We then answered reading questions and discussed each groups responses. Before we knew it, another wonderful English class had sadly come to an end.

So today was very relaxing, and we actually didn't do a lot of things.....mostly because it was a half day. First off, Mrs. Wray had us get into the groups we were in from our previous class, and each group discussed their topic (trust, rivalry, etc.). After everyone shared and discussed each topic, we all were sent off to the library to retrieve A Separate Piece. We then traveled back to the classroom and began reading the book; Mrs. Wray also passed out a white sheet of paper that had a summary of the author and novel.
Homework due May 4, 2010:~Read chapters 1-2 in the novel.

At the beginning of class ms. wray had us take out the narrator worksheet and notes with 5 sources, She checked them, then we had a discussion with our table groups about our narrator worksheet and gave each other feedback.
Ms. Wray then handed our the story planning sheet, to work on once we were done with the narrator discussion, Ms. Wray claimed that we were a dysfunctional class, but we all know thats not true and that she is. DUH.

Today, we walked into the classroom to discover that Mrs. Wray and her kids are sick, and she was replaced by the substitute teacher, Kane, who preferred not to be called "mr". He was kind enough to share with us that he had never taught a white student before, welcome to Lake Oswego, Kane! Then we took another brief set of notes on bibliography/works cited pages (in MLA format) for our Living History projects. To go along with the notes we were taking, we got a yellow piece of paper with a sample works cited on it with proper formatting that we could base ours off of. After an unnecessary discussion on the differences between a works cited and a bibliography (in which we didn't really come to any conclusion), we all went to the library for the rest of the class period to type up and turn in a rough draft of our bibliography to the sub. When we were finished, we could work on finishing the notes for all 5 of our required sources.

Today we reveiwed participal phrases, AGAIN.. and were told to listen so we did okay on the quiz. Little did I know that the quiz was going to be RIGHT AFTER we reveiwed. We also went over the research requirements for our paper which included things such as: use only reliable sources, no more than 2 websites, and at least 1 print source (books, films etc.) Then went to the lab and found more information about our topics and go checked off for doing our homework. Next class, we'll be starting are state writing test, be there or be square.

Today was a very casual but informative class. We handed in our homework and then Ms.Wray explained to us our options for researching our topics to keep us organized. One of the options she told us would be very helpful would be using notecards.. So with that said directed us to the wiki where she clicked on the units of study tab, ---> where you click on Living History Project --> and can find information on using notecards to your advantage while completing the research process as well as sample papers. Ms. Wray even suggested taking a look at the english honor class' papers as well. We were also told that Tuesday (the 20th) and Thursday (the 22nd) of next week we will be taking a state writing test, so we should all prepared for that.

Today Ms. Skelly was our sub, she started off class handing us an example of a students research paper where we read it as a class and discussed what we learned about the research topic. Kelly on the other hand was singing the lyrics to tik-tok by Ke$ha. After, we went to the english lab to start finding research on our topics and answer the questions on the discovery research response sheet that were handed out. The last half of class we went back to our classroom to listen to a presentation about information sources that we can find on our home page of the school's website.

To start off the class this day, Mrs. Wray decided to give us a 5-10 minute Journal write, which was more of a free write. While we were writing we were (look at all those w's), allowed to listen to our ipods if we wanted, or to the music Mrs. Wray was going to play. I was listening to my ipod, (song choice: "Oh My Gosh" by Usher. I do recommend), when i heard a little jingle through my headphones. This jingle just happened to be the one and only single most danceable song, "Don't Stop Believing" by the one and only, Journey. The next thing I know, I look up and the entire class had broken out into the robot. But being a good student, I continued with my free write. After the free write and the robot was over, Mrs. Wray taught us about participles, which are functions that act as an adjective, but looks like a verb. We practiced writing these by writing sentences about a picture of people on a road with trees by it. Then to practice a little more, Mrs. Wray gave us a worksheet to do with more examples. We did the front in class and the back for homework. We then handed in our Venn Diagrams with our think pieces in them.

FUN FACT OF THE DAY!!: a gerund is a -ing verb acting as a noun.

Next we were introduced to a assignment. An assignment known as; the Research Project. For this we were given a sheet with topics to choose from, once we had the 3 top choices for ourselves, we were to write 3 sentences explaining out choice. The type of writing is a short story, 5-7 pages, that is told through a fictional character that witnessed but was not a main part of the event.

We walked into the room and those of us who missed last class heard all about the amazing party with frappuccino's and cake! Then Ms Wray asked the class who would like to be in Junior Honors English, and about 3 people raised their hands. Then those select few recieved a sheet and have to take a bunch of test and write some essays. Next we were passed out a pink peice of paper with the main characters in Shakespears comedy, Much Ado About Nothing. It shows how all of them relate to eachother. Then we looked at the movie cover and learned that it has the actor who plays Dr. Wilson in House and, in Mr Wray's words, "The Worlds Worst Actor". Then we watched the first part of the movie Much Ado About Nothing and had to ask ourselves the differences between comedy and tragedy.

First we waited outside the door like usuall, and then Ms. Wray unlocked it for us. Then we walked into class and basically just turned in our assigned homework which were the Motife's, and our Reading Log's. After Trish coming by to come get them all, Will Waterman starting talking about his incident with richard like a few periods ago, or like at lunch. Will, i guess stole a book from Richard Kwon then lost it. We had a Court in session and it basically woke up the class and it was very interesting. I got Richard out of the class he was in (which was Studyhall) and had him come in and talk to the class.
After the 5 minutes of debating, we had a Journal Write (18) about the reaction of this play (Macbeth), and Macbeth's death. After the Jrnl Write, we were handed out a sheet of questions that we would write examples for. (very confusing). Then after that we formed a square as a class and had in in class secratic seminar and talked about the questions (the confusing ones) and also just the play and how we liked it. Ms. Wray tallied marks for the people who talked in this seminar.
After that we did a reflexion on the back of the paper and then just turned in everything and left for 4th Period.

Today, class began with the vocab quiz. It was pretty tough. Then, a group of senior girls from year book came in and did a powerpoint for us and gave out applications. You don't get any homework, so it's a pretty nice class. After that, we got our journals out and did Jounal #17. We made a t-chart, one column headed good and the other headed evil. There were a few drawings of good v. evil on each table.(we drew them a while ago) We went around and identified what kind of words described good and evil and wrote them down. (i.e. Good: heavenly, colorful, happy. Evil: dark, winter.) Try to stay away from objects like smiley faces. We also wrote a small response on whether we thought Macbeth was purely evil. That was the end of our journal write and we moved on to the book. We listened to the recording of Act.4sc.3 and answered about 7 questions on it with our table groups. Beware the Ides of March. I don't know what that means, but Ms.Wray wrote that on my scribe sheet so i'll just write it assuming that's what she wanted me to do.

Mrs. Wray opened class today by giving us our new scribe note rules: if you post your scribe notes on the day assigned, you can get an 11/10. If you post your scribe notes the next day (before a "curfew" of 8 p.m.) you can still get a 10/10. Then, we briefly talked about our Macbeth projects (to be due April 1st) and that if you have another idea for your project, then you should talk to Mrs. Wray about it ASAP! Then Mrs. Wray got kind of confused and said it was the last Thursday before spring break, but everyone quickly corrected her. Next, we watched a scene from Roman Polanski's Macbeth. It was Banquo's death scene and the creepy scene where Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo. After it was over, we discussed the portrayal of Lady Macbeth and Banquo's ghost in this version of Macbeth. Then we counted off and were split into three groups where everyone made fools of themselves howling, hooting, and making bad wind sounds while the three "witches" put their ingredients in the cauldron and sang the song from Harry Potter. We went back to our seats and read Act 4 Scenes 1-2 out of our books and talked about all the disgusting stuff the witches mixed in their cauldron and Mrs. Wray told us a story of how she scarred her 4 year old son for life by showing him the Thriller music video. To end the class, we played a fun charades vocab game in groups.

Since some people decided not to show up in class today, I have decided to make this detailed. We started off class with a vocab quiz, or "quizzy" as Ms. Wray put it, but it turned out not to be too difficult. At the end of class when Ms. Wray read the scores it seemed like most people did pretty well. After that we learned that grades would be posted online soon because progress reports are coming out soon. Next Trish passed back some grammar work that we did on appositives. Contrary to what I thought, the in class work was graded and I ended getting some low scores. Right before that we changed seats, and I am now sitting with Harrison and Ari. For the rest of the class we read act 3 scene 1 from Macbeth. There were many volunteers for the "servant" and "murderers" roles so Ms. Wray picked a number between 1-100. I guessed 76 and the number was 78 so i got some easy participation points. The class analyzed a speech made by Macbeth explaining how he is afraid of the witches' prophecy that Banquo's children will become king, and that he has become King but his children will not see the throne. To change the prophecy Macbeth finds two assassins. We talked about how Macbeth is becoming very manipulative, and how his changing character is very evident when he persuades two murderers to kill Banquo and Banquo's son.

Homework: White worksheet that makes you find quotes to prove Macbeth is becoming manipulative, and then write a paragraph on the back about how Macbeth has changed, and how he is becoming like Lady Macbeth.

At the beginning of the class, we wrote down out homework and stamped the ones we had completed. Quickly after this we took out our journals and began writing journal number 15 which was about the feelings and actions of Macbeth. We then discussed the previous reading and the section of reading we were supposed to complete at home. When everyone was finished with their journal entry, we discussed our different ideas on the topic. Then we quickly read the short section of 2.4 and answered a few questions off the board. We left the room and slept through our next class, looking up every once in a while to see if the clock has changed any.

Today we had a sub, Mr. Branam (?) who is a pro at speaking with an irish accent. We started off getting our journals and writing a new journal entry (#14) about Macbeth's state of mind. After 5min of brainstorming about the topic, we discussed it as a class. Then we got our our Macbeth books and began reading Act 2 Scene 2 (Allison as lady macbeth & trenten as macbeth). Questions were put on the board for us to answer as table groups, some of us actually did it but most were completely off topic, the usual. Then as table groups we were given a script from the Macbeth reading that we had to act out. We picked the time of the scene, and a new setting but with the same dialogue. Two people from each group acted out as Lady Macbeth and Macbeth, the third person was the narrator who had to explain what was happening in the scene. Each group acted out something completely different, they were in a haunted house, a ship, and at prom.

After everyone trudged into the class (realizing that it was vocab quiz day!) and took their seats, Mrs.Wray began the class. As everyone scrambled to cram the vocabulary words into their head at the last minute, Mrs. Wray walked around and stamped the pink Lady Macbeth quote and question sheet. All around the room people kept repeating the memorized vocab words, and Mrs. Wray passed out the Vocab #1 Quiz. At the last minute, Mrs. Wray reminded us that sweet treats were available for the class if everyone got 100%, but unfortunately once everyone had finished, Mrs. Wray informed us that not everyone got 100%. Maybe next time! When the last quiz was turned it, we took out the pink Lady Macbeth quote and question sheet, and went over the answers, then passed the paper in. Afterward, everyone got out their Macbeth books and turned to page 39 to begin reading. Mrs. Wray passed out a green sheet, in which had a Macbeth quote on it. We underlined sentences where reasons why Macbeth doesn't want to kill Duncan were. Then, we also circled words that were synonyms for "death". Mrs. Wray then split the class in half, and each group went to separate sides of the room. As one side of the room had to read the quote, the other group had to scream murder every time a circled "death" word came up. The side I was on, had to read the quote first, and I have to admit, that we did absolutely horrible and couldn't read the quote in unison. Fail. Anyway, Mrs. Wray decided to switch sides so that we had to say murder now, since we couldn't read together. The other side was a lot better than the side I was on, and for some reason, my side decided to scream murder at the wrong times....but nonetheless, we got through it and sat back down, but not for long, because Mrs. Wray asked the class for one Macbeth (Jack) and four Lady Macbeth's (Sarah, Allison, Morgan and I). We all went to the front of the classroom where the four Lady Macbeth's rotated lines and attempted to circle and "yell" our lines at Macbeth who sat in the middle. Once the reading was done, Mrs. Wray yet again, handed out another sheet. This one happened to be blue and had 3 columns each labeled with different directors of different movies of their version of Macbeth. We watched the beginning "witch" scenes for each movie, and I think the whole class would agree when I say that it was quite disturbing, creepy and weird. They each had their own twist though, so we wrote our ideas on the columns. If you missed the class, that's too bad, because a lot happened.

Wow, this is my THIRD time doing scribes....
We started off today with checking off our homework, a quote for our log, and then we took out Macbeth and read the remains of scene 3 together. After that, we all lined up- in only 32 seconds- by our birthday and from that we split into groups of 4. Except I was behind Jasper so Ms. Wray didn't notice I was there.... so I had to join another group. Gosh, I wish I wasn't 5' 1! Anyway, in groups we read Act 1, scene 4 together and answered 4 questions from the smartboard interpreting the section, translating it into modern day language. Ms. Wray thought it would be fun/a good idea if we all stood up and made a fool of ourselves bowing down and making a "sssss" sound while pounding our arms up and down as we read through some more lines. Then we read scene 5 and scene 6 together splitting up parts. That's when Lady Macbeth (played by Morgan) enters the story and we concluded that she is evil (not Morgan, but the character.) To end off the period in a fun way, we did an activity where we casted Lady Macbeth and Macbeth celebrity style. Some of the class' choices for Macbeth was Will Smith, Denzell Washington, the Rock, and.... Trenten. Some of the Lady Macbeth choices were Janice Dickinson, Pam Anderson, Meryl Streep and Angelina Jolie.

HW: The motif worksheet if you found yours in today's reading; the questions on the pink worksheet about Lady Macbeth's speech; and next time there is a vocab quiz. Go on quizlet and remember that if we all get 100%, Ms Wray will give us all treats! Atleast that's what she told us she would do.

Welcome to Wednesday as Ms. Wray would put it. Since everyone was in class today I decided to keep this scribe short and sweet... As we all sat down for class there was a side debate between Trenten, Trish, and Ms. Wray regarding the variety of macaroni types and colors. Then we were handed strips of purple paper and worked on appositive sentences; which are noun phrases that represent (or clarify) another noun right beside it. We ended class by reading the next scene from Macbeth. HOMEWORK for tonight is to : do another quote and response in your response log

Today we had a short class. We were all assigned motifs to fill out whenever they came up in the reading that we do in Macbeth. I recieve manlyness which thankfully did not come up in the reading that day. We also had a competition to see if we could use all of our vocabulary words in five sentences or less and have them all make sense. We were not allowed to look at the meaningdswhile we did this so we had to do it from memory. Each table group tried and mine table won.

Today we had another thrilling and funny class that began with Ms. Wray brushing her hair. Obviously she was brushing it with a comb, but it wasn't just any comb. It was about the size of your palm, and the whole class agreed that she stole it from Barbie. Ms. Wray passed back our finals tests, which most people seemed to do superb. Shortly after, we discussed what went down last class when we attempted to act out Shakespeare. While Trenton was explaining the play, he said that he drank a cup of herbal tea with the King so he is the only person who actually knows what happened in the play. He also had difficulty in saying the word visitor but maybe it was because his hood pushed his ears out so he looked like an elephant. We also talked about the sub we had last class, and how she had an unusually deep voice and Trenton believed she spent most of her free time pumping iron. Ms. Wray then told us to say the things we liked and disliked about Shakespear, as we are starting to read Macbeth. Overall, there were alot more reasons why people disliked him. Today we also were sent back in time, to when we were all in Kindergarden, as Ms. Wray handed everyone a piece of blank paper and told them to draw something that represented evil on one half and something good on the other half of the paper. Then, Ms. Wray passed out a small strip of paper to the class and it has a sentence on it, and a number. The class stood in a circle in number order and read the lines. We read through the circle a number of different times, as we had to use more tone and hand gestures. Lastly, to conclude the day, we wrote in our journals answering questions about the sentences everyone read.

We started class by filling out a semester one course evaluation sheet. Ms. Burnett (our sub) then gave us a "introduction to performance" handout because we will soon be starting our Shakespeare unit. We learned about denotations and connotaions. Denotation meaning the dictionary meaning of a word and connotation meaning the implied or associated meaning of a word. We need to know these before we start studying Shakespeare. Then we got in groups of 4 or 5 and acted out a Shakespeare scene. If you weren't there you missed out...

so today was a review day pretty much... didn't do alot really. First we handed in our poems that we were supposed to right modeling it on the poem we read in class last time about the spanish war. Miss Wray then read some that she liked from the ones we turned in (surprisingly not mine). Next we had a super duper very exciting vocab quiz #9 that was fairly easy. After that we had the rest of the "poetry out loud" recitations. The participants included; Camryn, Will, Sarah (who has a dog named fletcher whom is a labradoodle. FYI), Ciara, Martha, Allison, Jordan (didn't wear shoes), Kelly, Kyle, Autri*(sorry if thats wrong), Sierra, Mnantz Party Pantz, and of course, The Big "A" (ayumi). Everybody was perfect which made me look bad. then we discussed how to write an analysis and did an activity that was absolutely pointless. We then proceeded to analyze an example paper and recieved the study guide for the final!!!!. You can go to the glossary that has examples of poetry terms that is on the wiki under sophomore english, units of study.
homework is to study for final and the vocab is 108 points on the vocab so if you get that you pretty much can get atleast a B.

After we talk a bit of the spanish civil to help us understand a poem that was later read to us by Ms.Wray. the poem was "i'm Explaining a few things" by Neroda. Then we were given a worksheet to do with people in our tables about the poem Ms.Wray read. When that was completed, as we went over the worksheet. After we were given another worksheet that was for our homework. we first had to come up with a topic to write about then we partnered up with someone and brainstormed with them. Then we had voluenteers to recite their poem to the class.

These pieces of paper had words on them that Ms. Wray wanted us to use in our writing. Then we got into groups with people who also had the same word and defined them. Thus we created colorful posters and shared them with the class. Then we took out our poems and got the rubric that Ms. Wray will score us on. Then we were handed a blue sheet of paper with stuff we have to do to look at our poem and tips to remember it.

The first day of English after winter break was uneventful for the most part and I am sure the entire class could agree that they were not too thrilled to be back in school. We spent the first part of class reminiscing about winter break and how great it was. Afterwords, Ms. Wray told us that our sub the lovely Mrs. Rathbun had taken pictures of us during class and sent them to her. I was unaware of this and found it kind of creepy when Ms. Wray told us. The class then turned to the poetry packet. We struggled at times when we were dissecting the poems and finding the meanings of them. We then began a strange conversation which we usually have each class. Somehow the movie Avatar was brought up and a particular scene of the movie was reenacted by Phil. I was not sure if Ms. Wray was laughing at Phil or just weirded out by him. For the next part of class, we took out a piece of paper and folded it into thirds. We labeled them 1, 2, and 3. Under the 1 column Ms. Wray told us to write 5 emotions that you felt over the past months. The the 2 column we wrote 5 different colors. They could be anything form blue or yellow, to Aqua or Ms. Wray's favorite Chartreuse. Finally in the 3 column we wrote 5 symbols such as, a knife, star, or door. We then combined one word from each of the 3 columns and to create a metaphor (i.e. sadness is like a black sun). You then had to write a 10 sentence poem using the metaphor. Finally to end class Ms. Wray passed back the Odyssey narrative papers we wrote. All in all, it was an average day in room 201.

Today we had Ms. Rathbun as our sub and we got candy! We also watched some videos on youtube about winterformal and poetry with my help setting it up on full screen. Then she figured out how to do it and she got really excited. Then we watched ANOTHER video about poetry- regarding the Poetry Out Loud competition to be exact. The video had the two finalists reading their poetry. They were really inspirational people reading the poetry in emotional actions and voices. That proved that even if you don't write the poetry you can still read it making an impact on the audience. This video was showed to all of the English classes trying to get people involved in the Poetry Out Loud competition. Ms. Rathbun talked a bunch about poetry and previous experiences with poetry. She then began talking about William Bill Stafford who was actually Ms. Rathbun's old neighbor which was really cool! Later Ms. Rathbun told us to pick partners to recite our poems that we picked out from the poetry website. We were supposed to recite it using emotions just like the finalists read their poems. After that we split up into groups and were assigned one of the poems in the poetry packet to answer the questions below/next to them. Then we split into different groups after we answered the questions for our assigned poem. We shared the answered questions to everyone in the new group so at the end we all had the answers to every poem in the packet. THen class was over- one more period left until winter break!!!!!!!!!!!
Homework: Enjoy winter vacation (and hope it snows) and have your poem MEMORIZED by next class. You could change it if you want to but you have to use the same website. Have a wonderful, relaxing and FUN break everyone!

Today in English we started out with the usual small talk with Mrs. Wray asking about how our weekends went and how we were doing and with the usual added side comments from Trenten which as always lasted through out the period. We were then asked to take out a sheet of paper and answered a couple questions about thesis statements to help prepare us for the in class essay that we will be writing next class (12/14) We will be choosing one of three prompts and writing an essay on it and it’ll be our “test” over Of Mice and Men . After that we were given an example prompt and in our table groups we had to come up with a well written thesis statement which then Mrs. Wray critiqued. Then we got back into our groups and worked on creating a visual and shared them with the class. We ended the class by cleaning up all our markers and yet again being reminded to study for vocabulary quiz.
Homework: Study your vocabulary, quiz #7 will be on Monday 12/14 and next class BRING YOUR BOOK for the in class essay!

Today when we walked in the room Cody announced to the class that he was turning 17 tomorrow. Ms. Wray then investigated, on a big database that has all of the students' personal information, and discovered that actually Cody's birthday is March 8, 1994. Then Ms. Wray showed us the Can Food Drive video, and next we started class with a quiz over chapters 1-4 in Of Mice and Men. After this we reviewed the character posters we made last class and were supposed to think about how some of the characters had changed in the latest chapters. In an attempt to start a discussion, we brought up how most of the main characters were lonely and had no companions such as Crooks, or Candy. Candy's dog was euthanized to save it from more pain and trouble, which (most likely) foreshadows the ending to this novel. Also we talked about how all of the main characters had dreams, and the different power struggles on the farm. This led to discussing Curly's small ego, and his need to make himself seem more powerful. One of these ways was telling people that his glove was full of Vaseline, so as to keep it soft for his wife. Trish, our DA, took this opportunity to explicitly describe this particular situation in the story, which ended with Ms. Wray screaming to try to block out the words being used. In a final attempt to stimulate discussion, we had a socratic seminar after analyzing a quote from the book, and this took us to the end of class.

soo..at the beginning of class we talked about how LO lost the game..then how mrs. wray lost her cat..then finally we had some vocab practice sheet and went over all the words and talked about how mrs. wray's sentences are always really depressing. then we each got paired up and assigned a word and had to personify it. we had a worksheet of American Dreams and Friendship and it was just some questions..oh ya then there was a really random side conversation on if a shark was a mammal or not which we never got a straight answer..later we got in groups and made a poster of an assigned character from of mice and men..homework is to read ch. 3-4 and there's a vocab quiz next class..thats about it.

We walked into class on wednesday, bored and tired as can be. We all saw the sub for the day which was Ms. Skelly who's the nicest, coolest biology teacher in the school. She seemed really quiet but very nice. While she was doing attendence, everyone kind of goofed off in the class. She asked for a scribe and we were off to the lesson. First she had us do an exercise that we have never done in the class before. She wanted to have us leave comments on five sentences that she put on tables, around the room. She had us be silent and walk around the room and leave our answer and controversial opinions on each question. That took a good 20 minutes. After that she had us get into a group of 4 or 5 to discuss our assigned question. Each group had a leader who read the responses and then shared to the rest of the B3 class. We discussed and debated each question thoroughly. After that we were assigned our homework.

We started our wonderful- psh yeah right- Monday with reviewing over our vocabulary 5 words and their definitions because some people have been using these words in the wrong part of speech. So Ms. Wray asked us to define “Wily” from the list and give examples (“Wily Coyote" as Trenton explained.) And we looked to see how many people added their Odyssey/Ulysseus paragraphs to the wiki and only 17 people (plus another 2 printed out) added their paragraphs to the discussion page. Guys, do your homework!!! J
Then we all took out our journals and completed Journal 8 which was “What does it mean to create? Please come up with a definition of creation and provide examples of different types of creation.” We discussed how creation is a very broad topic and difficult to define being that there are so many different types of creation from physically like artwork to mentally like creating thoughts and dreams. Then the class talked about if it is possible to create something totally new. We thought of examples like what Cody said, “Humans” and Jasper said the “World”. Also Harrison thought of an interesting example- “dinosaurs”. That created some laughs from the classroom. But he was serious.
J
Later we did an introduction to Biblical literature seeing what we all know about the five major world religions, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam by filling out a worksheet with questions to test our previous knowledge. We all learned how much we knew and didn’t know about these religions. Also we talked about how movies refer to the bible in many ways. Some of those movies were Star Wars, Star Trek, Matrix and more. This worksheet was not due in class but it is good to keep.Lastly we read some of the book of Genesis together and we then talked about the creation of the world, God’s power and the creation of people. Interesting stuff!
J Hope you had a wonderful Monday, everyone!
Homework:
Finish Genesis reading and complete the questions…… Study for vocab 5 quiz on Friday 11-20. (Thursday for A day). Also you need to know how to define the Greek and Latin roots and know the definitions of all of the examples refered to on the vocabulary sheet. If we all get 100% a big prize is in store!!!
Oh, and see Brigadoon too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 11/19, and 11/21

Today we started off class by finishing the wonderful movie "O Brother Where Art Thou". Next, we talked about "writing situations" and Mrs. Wray explained our homework (which is listed at the bottom). After that we went over our Odyssey tests - Which our very own Wyatt Hayden got the best score out of all of Mrs. Wray's classes on! Wahoo! Then we had a chance to re-write our essay to add anything we left out, and we learned a few tips on how to answer essay questions better. Mrs. Wray's advice was to answer them "thoroughly and thoughtfully". After going over our tests and re-writing the essay questions we did Journal number 7 - a free write. A couple people shared what they wrote about and shortly after Trent broke out into song. He called himself "a lyrical mastermind" and the class pretended to laugh so that he felt funny. As another interesting day in Mrs. Wray's english class came to an end, we took a quiz on parts of speech to see what we knew. My guess is that this means we get to do grammar next! get excited everybody!!

Homework:
  • Post a one paragraph response to one of the prompts on your tracking sheet - Comparing "O Brother Where Art Thou" to the Odyssey. (Post on the wiki under "extended discussion" for our period B3)
  • Vocabulary sentences for list 5 (remember - don't e mail attachments!)

In class on thursday we started the day with Journal Entry #6 in our english journals. This entry was a self-reflection about our presentations. after we did the journal entry we got our graded presentations back and some graded quizs. then we got paired up by Ms. Wray to peer edit each others "Odyssey" stories. during that period Sarah got her phone taken away because she was texting in class. By the way her hiding spot for her phone was awful.

After reviewing what the requirments are, we brainstormed as a class and Mrs. Wray went around and checked on each persons idea and offered advice. we also started a journal entry the topic was Is Odysseus a hero or not? For those of you that werent in class, Trenten was sent to the hall and that marked the most eventful part of english. The homework is listed below.

My scribe notes
So today in english we started by talking about those presentation we are doing which by the way are due next time. We had fourty minutes to work on them in calss and it felt like forever. Next we all got out our books and were told to line up by first names. MS. Wray then grouped us into groups of four and we all got a sheet of paper. Then we had to Answer these questions that were on the board and share our answers with the class.
Homework:
Myth presentations are due next class all groups
Also read book 22 and try to understand it

kicker 21 (Harrison Greenberg)
Class started out with everyone getting into their myth groups and we all talked about what we wanted to do for our myth projects. So we talked about that for about an hour. It was boring... Then, because ms. wary knows everyone read, we took a quiz on book 19. It wasn't very hard, all you had to do was read. Then we got our books out and opened to page 405( bottom of the page) - 406 (top of the page). The class talked about the questions that we on the quiz. Women didn't nurse their own children during the time period of the book. We just talked about the importance of those pages.

So...lucky me, i got to be the scribe today! I will try to make this as accurate as possible. First off, class started with Ms. Wray talking to the class about the PSAT coming up tomorrow. You are arranged in alphabetical order to which class you will be taking the test in. So if your last name starts with A-Bo, then your in room 214, Br-Condon is room 213, Connolly-En is room 318, Ev-Gonzales, Jacobi is room 317, Gonzales, Julien-Hub is room 316, Hunt-Kim is room 315, King-Li is room 314, Lo-Neg is room 313, Nel-Po is room 312, Pr-Si is room 311, and so on. It will most likely be posted somewhere in the school tomorrow. There is snack time in the morning, but it is not provided. You have to buy it, so I suggest you not go and sleep in a little more. Just be at school at 8. Even though the PSAT does NOT count for anything, if you want to do well, read the PSAT packet. Also, there is a small list of things you need to bring in the packet like pencil and calculator, so be sure to look at the list. Moving along, we talked about Greek mythology presentation and got with our groups to discuss what we are going to do. There was a change in the presentation date for some of the groups. If you were assigned Narcissus and Echo, your presentation date is 10/22, Orpheus and Euridice is 10/20, and everyone else is the same. Make sure to read the purple handout (the one we wrote our group members in) which has the requirements. If you were gone today, talk to your other group members. Many of the other students are meeting outside of class to make the most amazing presentation, so exchanging contacts would be a good idea. If you are doing a skit, you don't have to memorize it, but make sure you can say your lines smoothly. With 20 minutes left of class, Ms.Wray rushed to explain our homework. First we are reading book 19 (skipping 14-18). Also, get out a piece of paper, write Helpers on top of the page, Hindrances on the bottom and an Oreo sized circle in the middle with the word goal in it. In the circle, write your personal goal such as, "get good grades" or "I want to go to Africa." Then under helper, write at least four or five things that will help you achieve your goal such as your clever mind or encouraging friends. For the hindrances, write at least four or five things that keep you from your goal such as facebook. This assignment is called brainstorming HW. We will be doing a writing on it which we haven't talked about yet, so you don't have to worry. This was pretty much what the day summed up to be, same as usual.

HOMEWORK: read book 19 (skip 14-18), finish brainstorming (4-5 helpers and 4-5 hindrances), and keep working on Greek Mythology group work.
All do next class.

When we walked into the classroom after lunch, we were all surprised to see not Ms. Wray at the front of the classroom, but dear Mrs. Rathbun as our substitute for the day. She saw right through all of our lies when we told her that we understood last night’s reading and took pity on us by summing it up for us. We listened to her synopsis summary while sitting on the floor closing our eyes silently… kind of. With our minds refreshed on the events of Books 10 and 11, Mrs. R gave us a contest in which each table group was given 12 pictures and we saw who could put them in the order of the events the fastest and promised the winners candy next time she came. It was really hard and I don’t think any table group ever got all the pictures in the correct order. Next, we made a chart of the pictures and their significance in the Oddyssey, and Mrs. R rarely approved of anyone’s answers and gave the Rathbun stare to a few talkative students. Then, we had journal write #4 making a prediction for the coming events in the book using evidence from what we’ve read so far. Mrs. R gave out smiley face stickers which seemed good at first, but turned out it just meant you had to tell your answer to the class. In the last 10 minutes of class we started to read book 12 outloud, but only got a few pages in.

HOMEWORK: -Read book 12
-Finish reading your individual myth and be prepared to discuss
-Vocab Quiz next class on list 1 & 2

while sitting in my living room eating a cup of noah's bagels bagel poppers with a fork because they were too messy with the frosting, i realized i had to post my scribe notes for all the couch potatoes not in attendance (camryn hannah) on the date of my lucky event miss wray bestowed onto muaw. that was a long sentence for some reason. So the first act i was destined to complete on this day in the time of the middle earth apparently, was a quiz over the book 9 we were assigned to read. (nailed it). then in a freckle past a hair later, the teach decided to assign us to different myths we were supposed to read for the "greek mythology presentations". she included packets of the myths witht he assigning of the myth. Spacing out and probably throwing thigs and will waterman and cody peterson, i soon discovered the secret to understanding what we are told to be called literature; the odyssey. miss wray released to us a tip, so to speek, on why she can understand the odyssey and the rest of us pretend to read and stare at the words then turn the page.(clay lee). you had to be in class to get the tip sorry you were probably really excited to hear it with a build up like that. kidding! the tip was to read out loud not really as cool as i wrote it to be. then she showed us the real treasure of the day. the one and only STUDY GUIDE ON THE WIKI UNDER THE "UNITS OF STUDY" CATEGORY. (put it in caps so you can get the actual important information out of reading all this). next the wonderful wray gave out her phone number on slips of paper (buh!/kidding). It was really lines of book nine you had to read and put into a comic square. Then put all the comic squares (that were not comical at all) in order to make a comic strip. During the comic fiasco, miss wray shouted that she was "feeling it!" about a students artwork i believe.

homework esta; READ BOOKS 10 &11 BY 10/6 (TUES), AND FINISH READING YOUR MYTH BY 10/8. Also, we have a wonderful QUIZ ON THE VOCAB LISTS 1&2 ON 10/8

Through all the sick people, erasers being thrown, and everyone mindlessly talking, Ms. Wray somehow got the class settled down and focused on what was on today's agenda. The first item on today's to-do list was Journal #3, which turned out to be our first free write journal. Ms. Wray thoroughly explained the guidelines and rules to the free write and those rules included the following:
~Write from the heart~No Talking~Be specific~Don't think~Keep hand moving~Write about whatever (friends, school, grass, cheese, etc.)
After discussing the rules with the class, everyone proceeded to jump up enthusiastically and retrieve their notebooks/journals from their folders. Once everyone calmed down and settled themselves into their seats, Ms. Wray told us that we would have approximately 10 minutes to write in our journals, so everyone quickly rushed to pick up their pencils and start scribbling away for the next 10 minutes. After the time was up, everyone discussed what they wrote about in our journals and Ms. Wray mentioned that next time she will play music during our journal writes because (evidently) it changes peoples mood's and what they write about. Anyway, everyone put their notebooks back into the folders and then Ms. Wray begin talking about how the vocabulary list #2 was on quizlet and everyone shook their heads in agreement, saying that "Quizlet is amazing and helped me a lot". Moving on to our second item on the to-do list, we had to pull out our Odyssey books to discuss what Chapter 7 was about. After talking about it within our table groups and the class, everyone decided that the overall summary was that Odysseus is basically just a flirt who tries to gain sympathy from the Queen. Making sure that we actually read chapter 7, Ms. Wray passed out a question sheet about the chapter and each table group had to write down the answers on their sheet. Trenton was paired up with the table next to me and throughout the whole 'answering questions sheet with table groups' he never decided to sit down because according to Trenton he has R.L.S (Restless Leg Syndrome). Everyone immediately burst of laughter and even Ms. Wray laughed at Trenton's seriousness with his answer as to why he wouldn't sit down. Trenton then proceeded to continue walking back and forth between his table and the marker box near the windows. The majority of today's class was taken up by going over and talking about the question sheet for chapter 7 and afterward, Ms. Wray informed us that we would NOT be reading chapter 8, so she told us a short summary of what happens: "The King summons a Phoenician assembly, they agree to send Odysseus home by ship. Games and feasting occurred and Odysseus was challenged by a young Phoenician, and Odysseus completely destroyed him in a discuss competition and challenged anyone else who dare doubt his strength. Everyone goes back into the palace and Deomdocus (a singer) began singing about the Trojan war. Odysseus started weeping and Alcinous (the King) questions him about if Odysseus lost someone in the war and why he was crying." After talking about chapter 8, Ms. Wray passed out the book #5 mini-quiz, the 12 Olympians quiz, and the Whats Important? sheet. My table group got our Olympians quiz and Cody and I decided to high five because we both got a 12/12 on the Olympian quiz! (I think almost everyone in the class got 12/12 also...). Then to finish off the end of the class and the last item on the list, the whole class pulled out their Odyssey books and a voice recording of the book started reading chapter 9 as we slowly followed along. Talk about a long class! Discussion after discussion, so if you were "sick" today, you missed out on a lot of fun!
Homework due October 2, 2009:
~Read the rest of book 9 and finish book 9 plot summary!
~Be prepared for book 9 reading check

Coming into a classroom with a bad start can mess up the whole day. With the jumbled words, the boys making weird voices, and the side conversations, we needed to start over. So that’s what we did, we had a busy day ahead . . . As I would be multitasking the whole time. When everyone got up to grab their journals we were told a few things: Make sure you identify the subject in your emails, be sure to bring your book to class because we use them everyday, and there’s a fancy pronouncing glossary in the back of The Odyssey which starts on page 521. Then by a show of hands the majority of people who “read” didn’t understand the reading. So, we then went on to tips about things to help us understand by eliminating distractions like Facebook and the TV. Ms. Wray promised that reading would get easier and we would soon start to actually care about what’s going on. Next ting we know we there is an elaborate picture of a labeled sphere on the smart board that ended up being wrong in its entirety. So with the top of some un-identified object Ms. Wray tried to describe how the Greek’s saw the world. They saw it as flat and they believed it stopped at the edges, rather than being round. We talked about the way Homer wrote the book. Martha and Ms. Wray both went on to agree they were happy Shakespearian actors didn’t speak in Iambic Pentameter because “That would be really annoying”. Then in table groups we had to find examples of epithets about famous people, like The Flying Tomato. Cody’s table came up with Frank the Tank and Trenten then proceeded to try and steal their idea and run up to the board to try to be the first to write it. Later Trenten’s entire table began laughing hysterically about an inappropriate joke, this is when he found his new favorite word – Orestes - Ms. Wray expressed how she signed up to teach high schoolers not third graders. After that Ms. Wray got a call and found out she has an offer on her house! So she was in an even better mood then normal and she did a little dance. Then we summarized books 2, 3, and 4 and everything suddenly became clear. As we were going over each summary the highlight was when Ms. Wray wrote T. (Telemachus) leaves secretly... Which made Trenten think she wrote tea leafs? One of the things I noticed today was how much Trenten talks. Every time I looked over he was talking ninety percent of the time. I even realized how many great ideas he has like, “Why don’t we just get all new computers?” and “Why can’t you just go to the computer lab to the computer I used and find my vocab. sentences instead of me having to email them again?” Ms. Wray tried to control his talking as discreetly as possible, “Telemachus identifies himself and announces... Trenten turn around...” Then Ms. Wray then asked us if she could tell us a story, how nice? This is how it went: Clytemnestra is with Agamemnon who is Menelaus' brother. Clytemnestra and Agamemnon's son is Orestes. When Agamemnon is away Clytemnestra has an affair with Agamemnon's cousin Aegisthus. When Agamemnon returns Clytemnestra and Ageisthus kill Agamemnon because they want to be together. So, Orestes kills Clytemnestra and Aegisthus! So basically as Ms. Wray sees it Clytemnestra is an evil and conniving WOMAN with an awkward name. Then, Trish found “Literally puke in your mouth EW” photos of Ms. Wray’s surfing accident and tried to make people look at them but wouldn’t look at them herself. With that said we ended the class with a nice surprise as we were waited for the bell to ring and announce third period was sadly over.

HW for September 22nd, 2009: Finish book 5, there will be a short reading check next class, and the first vocab quiz will be on Monday. Study up Trenten :)

After taking attendance on this day we went over the homework that was due. What we discussed was that if you are unable to e-mail an assignment you may print it out at home or at the school computers. At one point we got off topic and started sharing ways to punish our children when they become reckless. The quiz that we took was on the gods of Greece, there are 10 open spaces and 10 different gods that are available. After you finished the quiz you went on to watching a movie about how the gods interacted with each other, and how the Greeks believed they controlled almost everything that happens. After the movie is complete you play a game about the movie and what we have been learning. Then comes Journal Write #2, About your strengths and weaknesses, and how they affect your day to day life. A few people decided to share their strengths and weaknesses with the class. For Example; I am easily distracted during class. Then we learned 4 new vocab words, that I don't remember, If you want to learn them ask Ms.Wray. Then we did a class assignment where we drew 3 circles and in each of the circles was a word, Ogygia, Ithaca and Olympus. The reason we did this activity was to learn more about the book and what was going on.

Today we came in and were greeted with "happy after lunchish". We took our usual seats, but after about 30 seconds of sitting we had to get up and were assigned seats. Then we learned all about how to use our class website and who our first scribe was (ME). After that we were handed our first vocab list! We will know 180 new words by the end of the year, unless you are some genius that knows all of them already. Then we were assigned our homework, read farther down to see it! We later discussed our Journal Write #1. We created a class definition of myth and came up with some of our own cultural myths (ex: Santa and Big Foot). Soon after that we attempted to watch a movie about the Trojan War, we learned it was for grades 4-8. The computer froze and the movie would not load past 99%, that extremely upset Mrs. Wray. She then proceeded to smack the SmartBoard, which did absolutely nothing, but did entertain the class. We never even got to watch our movie or play the game after! So, we just moved on to reading The Odyssey. We got some background information about the Trojan War, Mrs. Wray even tried to draw a horse for us! (We thought it was a dolphin or an elephant. Nice try thought Mrs. Wray!) Then we read a couple of pages and the girls pulled even farther ahead in Trivia.
